The Presidential Palace, located in Nanjing’s Xuanwu district, is a renowned national cultural heritage site in China with a rich history spanning over 600 years. This historic site is not only a prominent tourist attraction but also serves as a well-preserved repository of architectural remnants from various periods, showcasing a blend of Chinese and Western styles. The palace is set amidst a lush natural environment, encompassing a leisure zone that extends over nearly 30,000 square meters. Visitors to the site can explore its expansive grounds, which total 90,000 square meters and are divided into three parts: the Central Line, the West Garden (also known as Xu Yuan Garden), and the East Garden.
Historical Events
The Presidential Palace has been the backdrop for numerous significant historical events, particularly during the 20th century. On January 1, 1912, Dr. Sun Yat-sen was inaugurated as the Provisional President of the Republic of China within its walls, marking the beginning of a new era in Chinese history. Over the next 15 years, the palace served various functions, including as the official residence of the Jiangsu Military Governors and the Vice-President's office.
In 1927, with the establishment of the Nanjing National Government, the Presidential Palace became the seat of government offices, playing a central role in the administration of the country. Following the end of the Anti-Japanese War, it continued to serve as the office of the national government and was used as the presidential office. On April 24, 1949, the People’s Liberation Army took control of the palace, and it subsequently became the offices of the Jiangsu provincial government. In 1998, it was renamed the Nanjing Historical Remains Museum of Chinese Modern History, marking its transition from a governmental hub to a historical and cultural landmark.
